What is a Veneer?

Veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic (porcelain) or a composite resin material, which are bonded to the front of teeth. This procedure requires little or no anesthesia and can be the ideal choice for improving the appearance of the front teeth. Veneers are placed to mask discoloration to brighten teeth and to improve a smile.

Why veneers?

Veneers are an excellent alternative to crowns in many situations. They provide a much more conservative approach to changing a tooth’s color, size, or shape. Veneers can mask undesirable defects. Veneers are ideal for masking discolored fillings in front teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may consider veneers.

What happens during the procedure?

Dr. Olga Dontsova has successfully installed hundreds of veneers and PDX Smile Gallery is growing by the day. Usually you will need 3 appointments for the entire procedure: exam and treatment planning, preparation, and bonding. To prepare the teeth for the veneers, the teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the small added thickness of the veneer. Usually, about half a millimeter of the tooth is removed, which may require a local anesthetic. After the tooth preparation, the dentist carefully bonds and sculpts the composite material onto the teeth.

What is a No-Drill or No-Prep Veneer?

There are several minimal preparation and “no-prep” or “no-drill” ceramic veneer options – including Lumineers, Durathin, Vivaneers, and other brands. It is very important to understand that veneers are not the only cosmetic dentistry option for every case of discolored, crooked, chipped, misaligned, or otherwise misshapen teeth.

While veneers are often called “instant orthodontics” and might be a viable option for slightly crooked teeth, they are not recommended for severely misaligned teeth. Functionality is the priority, and in the case of misalignment, nobody will guarantee the veneers will stay in place and will serve properly. In such instances, despite the longer treatment time, Dr. Dontsova recommends starting your way to the smile of your dream with braces or clear aligners Invisalign. Additionally, before choosing the best shade of veneers dr. Dontsova recommends teeth whitening to make sure the veneers will look natural.
